The Student Programs Committee invited all WFO members to join a special presentation by Scott Weidensaul on April 4, 2026, at 4 p.m. PST. This is event is now full and we are no longer accepting registrations.
About the presentation:
Messing Around with Birds (For Fun and Science)

Join naturalist Scott Weidensaul for a lighthearted exploration of his many avian research projects, from banding hawks and tiny northern saw-whet owls to studying the migration of western hummingbirds that aren’t supposed to be in the East in December (but are). Best of all, learn how anyone with some enthusiasm and time can make important contributions to the science and conservation of birds, and have a great time doing it.
Scott Weidensaul is the author of nearly 30 books on natural history, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist Living on the Wind and The New York Times bestseller A World on the Wing. His latest book, Return of the Oystercatcher, coming in April 2026, showcases what’s working for bird conservation around the world. Weidensaul is a contributing editor for Audubon magazine, a columnist for Bird Watcher’s Digest, and writes for a variety of other publications including Living Bird. He is a Fellow of the American Ornithological Society and an active field researcher, studying saw-whet owl migration for 30 years, as well as winter hummingbirds in the East, bird migration in Alaska, and the winter movements of snowy owls through Project SNOWstorm, which he co-founded.
